Hispanic
milestone develops market
Since she was 9 years old, Carina Taney Torres
had her eye on an approaching milestone. And it wasn't getting her driver's
license or her first kiss or even becoming a teenager.
It was her
quinceanera party, the 15th birthday celebration that often combines the
grandeur of prom, the solemnity of church and the celebration of a good party to
mark the passage from childhood to adulthood.
"She had this folder where
she collected all the things she wanted to have in her party," said her mom,
Cindy Torres of West Melbourne. "She knew how she wanted the tables to look,
what color the gowns would be."
The Melbourne Central Catholic student
got her wish for an ideal evening when her parents hosted an elaborate
quinceanera celebration at the Melbourne Rialto Hilton last fall.
"She
got what she wanted and then some," Cindy Torres said.
Brevard
businesses that cater to weddings and proms are getting what they want, too: a
growing niche market catering to quinceaneras.
"It's getting bigger and
bigger," said Meredith Ryder of Meredith's Bridal and Formalwear in Melbourne.
When Meredith's opened 35 years ago, quinceanera parties were unheard of
in Brevard.
"In the past two or three years, the number of them has
really jumped," Ryder said.
Using the company website and newspaper ads
to advertise quinceanera dresses, Ryder has developed a strong interest in the
gowns and their many accessories.
"With the Hispanic population growing
so much, the quinceaneras are no longer a small part of our business," she said.
At Aurora Unique Bridal Boutique in Melbourne, Cami Hester is expanding
just so she can offer more selections for the celebrations, often called
quinces.
"Some of the dresses can be quite poofy, so you need the
additional space," Hester said. "We will be bringing in more additional items
more attuned to quinces. We love working with them because they are so much
fun."

Steeped in the culture of Latin America, quinceanera celebrations are
rites of passage for Hispanic girls. The event pays homage to a 15-year-old
girl's transition from child to woman with often elaborate pageants that even
include a pseudo-coronation. Religion plays an important part, and the
celebration usually starts with a religious ceremony before moving on to party
time.
Making the fairy tale come true, however, doesn't come cheap. It
is not unusual for a quinceanera celebration to tally in the thousands of
dollars, rivaling lavish weddings.
"It cost us a lot," said Torres, who
orchestrated a "Night in Puerto Rico" theme for her daughter's sit-down dinner
and party at the Hilton. "I told her she is going to have to give us another 15
years before she gets married, because it took us 15 years for us to be able to
afford her quinceanera."

Some families take the
divide-and-conquer approach, and relatives and friends may "sponsor" the gown or
other aspects of the celebration.
"A lot of time, I think parents will
spend more on a quinceanera celebration than on a wedding," said Melbourne
photographer Rich O'Connor, who was in charge of the photography for Carina's
quinceanera. "It's the first step in a young lady's life, and the parents want
her to be happy."
Carina selected not one, but two gowns for the affair,
opting for a dreamy, Cinderella-like gown for the first part of the ceremony
before changing into a party dress as the event progressed.
She was
very, very careful when selecting her gowns, for if anything defines a
quinceanera celebration, it is the girl's gown.
With yards of tulle,
organza and taffeta in colors that range from pure white to fuchsia, the dresses
are beautiful -- and expensive.
"The quince gowns can run anywhere from
$200 to $450," Ryder said.
In Carina's court were six girls and two

teens, as well. The gowns for the attendants range upward from $100, and the
guys pay $50 or more for tux rental, plus coordinated ties and vests to match
the girls' dresses.
"I felt it was part of my culture," said Carina, who
says her non-Hispanic friends at Melbourne Central Catholic were impressed by
the pageantry. "It was a lot bigger than I had expected, and my friends really
liked it."
While Carina got her princess tiara and court of attendants,
she mixed tradition with modern touches, such as professional photography by the

Even Disney, the company that defines make-believe,The quality of

onto the quinceanera market. For Disney, already experienced in lavish weddings,
the quince market is a natural addition that taps onto the more than 1 million
Latinas who turn 15 every year in the U.S.
Disney features quince
celebrations set amidst the "Illuminations" fireworks display and the global
cultures at Epcot, a "Dancing with a Star" theme at one of the parks or resort
hotels and the quinceanera party of all time,Di samping menjadi pelopor kerja

Disney and other businesses are savvy to the fact that an
additional benefit for venues catering to quinceaneras are the repeat
possibilities. When those 15-year-olds reach their wedding years, they probably
will again head for the gown shops, caterers and photographers that served them
well.
"We sell a lot of wedding gowns to Hispanic brides," Ryder said.
"It's a big part of our business."
